Junior / Senior AI Research Consultant (2 Positions) – AI.UP

The AI Competence Center (AI.UP) at the University of Potsdam invites applications for two AI Research Consultant positions (f/m/d) (ID no. 309/2026), full-time (TV-L E13), limited to 4 years, starting in summer 2026.

The newly established AI Competence Center (AI.UP) develops and consults on advanced AI methodologies across disciplines and supports data-driven research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and competitive grant initiatives.

Your Role

  • Provide high-level AI and methodological consulting across natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences
  • Develop and implement advanced AI methods
  • Support grant proposals and strategic research initiatives
  • Initiate pilot studies and proof-of-concept projects
  • Contribute to workshops and training activities
  • Pursue independent research (≥ 1/3 protected research time)

Your Profile

  • Master’s or PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, or related fields (PhD desirable)
  • Strong background in machine learning and modern AI methods
  • Excellent programming skills (preferably Python)
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific consulting

Postdoctoral Position – Causal Inference & Explainable AI

The Chair of AI in the Sciences at the University of Potsdam invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) (ID no. 308/2026), full-time (TV-L E13), limited until June 30, 2029 (start date summer 2026).

The position is embedded in the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1294 “Data Assimilation” and focuses on research at the intersection of causal inference and explainable AI (XAI). The goal is to develop AI systems that are causally interpretable and support mechanistic and interventional reasoning in complex real-world systems.

We seek a highly motivated researcher with:

  • A PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, or a related quantitative field
  • Strong background in causal inference and/or explainable AI
  • Excellent Python and machine learning skills
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
